Design Profile 3 Strut, Hybrid design, Sleek wing tips, Draft forward profile.
The Contra is a three strut light wind kite, designed to optimize low-end power while retaining the finesse that keeps this kite fun to fly. The high aspect ratio maximizes power production and makes generating power and speed a snap. Our trademark depower-on-demand makes managing this power effortless, allowing it to execute sharp and precise turns. Tuned to deliver the type of performance that will widen the scope of what you can do in light winds, the Contra has the power to get you up and riding when the winds are barely showing signs on the water. For 2017 we added pure profile panels to and brought the struts closer to the center to increase canopy support.

Features and Benefits

  • The perfect lightwind extension to your quiver
  • Pure Profile Panels for a better supported canopy
  • Easy park and ride allows even advanced freestyle tricks in lightwind
  • Featherweight control ensures less work for a nimble, light in the hand effect
  • Works well with any board in your quiver
  • Easy relaunch so you're not left downwind

Pro Span

Improves the relationship between the actual canopy area and the lifting canopy area. With Pro Span, a majority of the kite?s surface area is working for you in a lifting capacity which also improves speed and upwind performance. The key element is not the flat canopy area and aspect ratio of the design, but the in-flight projected area and projected aspect ratio. Once it takes shape in-flight the power comes from the efficiency, and the efficiency comes from decreasing the induced drag of the overall wing by having more lifting area focused in the ?projected? power producing section of the wing. The defining feature of the Apollo is its ultra high aspect design which translates into a higher projected span.

Pure Profile Panels

The layout starts in segmented sections in the design software, but, in-flight its natural shape is a smooth arc. In order to make the transition between segmented and curved, we doubled the aerodynamic control by cutting each canopy panel in half at the center section, providing the ultimate curvature control which is where 90% of the performance comes from. When a kite is clean and smooth it will be faster through the sky giving you a broader range of performance.

Wing Tip Setting Options

We offer multiple tuning options this season which completely change the way a kite flies. These options allow you to customize the feedback and bar pressure, adjust where the kite sits in the window, and balance the power/ de-power range of the kite.
Cabrinha highly recommends testing the different settings for yourself to find out what feels the best to you.
A = The lightest bar pressure and lightest steering initiation.
B = Much more feedback, more bar pressure, shortened depower, and more steering impulse to know where the kite is.

1X Security System:  The 1X is not a depower system, it is a full blown shut down system. The 1X relies on only one line to immediately shut down the power of the kite whether it be on land or water in all wind conditions.

Power Control settings quickly adjust the power level of the kite. Each rear line ?pig tail? connector has three power positions which you can connect to. The middle position is the factory recommended position. Create more power by connecting the knot closest to the kite or less power by connecting to the knot closest to the rider.

2DR - Double Ripstop Cabrinha?s exclusive line of high-quality woven fabrics has been designed specifically for kitesurfing. Unlike many of the generic sailcloths available in today?s kites, the Volae materials have been specially developed to our exact specifications. The development process has taken over 5 years to create this dedicated kite material, which delivers the lowest stretch and highest durability on the market.

Skeletal Frame  All Cabrinha kites are designed and built on a Skeletal Frame foundation. We start by placing the most durable, 160 gsm Dacron material into a framework that locks in the intended shape. We then create the canopy shape and profiles with a light weight yet highly durable 53 gsm polyester woven material. We build on the durability of the canopy material with a second layer of 53 gsm two-ply material over the high stress strut sections. Next, we layer into the perimeter a 75 gsm, double ripstop reinforcement material to combat the extreme loads that are placed on the trailing edge and wing tip areas of the kite. Finally, we complete the kite with details such as molded EVA chafe protectors, robust leading edge protectors, and triple row stitching at the high stress inter-segment seams near the center of the kite. We seal it all up with a woven nylon ribbon reinforcement on the leading edge closing seam.

Dynamic Arc allows the kite to have two distinct arc shapes. The kite takes on one shape while flying, and another shape while in resting mode on the water. The flying shape occurs as soon as the kite gets airborne and the front lines are under tension. The flying shape is the kite?s intended shape which is optimized for the intended usage. The arc shape is held in place by a simple set of bridling. The dynamic arc shape occurs when the kite is not in flight, such as when the kite is resting on the water in relaunch mode. The dynamic arc allows the kite to open its span and orient the wingtips in a position to facilitate a super quick relaunch.

Sprint Airlock  Sprint Inflation System with Airlock is the most efficient and easy way to get your kite pumped up. The large one-way Airlock valve quickly feeds air into all of the struts from a single location. The Airlock connection to the Sprint pump now requires no special adapters. Once inflated, you can lock off each strut independently to keep your kite?s rigid frame, and isolate any accidental strut deflation from the rest of the kite. When the session is over, the entire kite will deflate in seconds thanks to the Airlock valve?s large dump feature.

TKB REVIEW: 2017 CABRINHA CONTRA

FEBRUARY 10, 2017

Sizes Available: 13, 15, 17, 19m
Sizes Tested: 13m

Our Testers Say:
?Lets you boost like a rocket and land like Mary Poppins.? // Chris Borodic.

?A grunty, stable and consistent power source. The Contra is great for learning new tricks in light winds or for foiling. It?s very well behaved and delivers when you need it.? // Dray Murray.

?Like driving a cement mixer on sedatives, the Contra has tons of power but isn?t in a hurry to turn. Once loaded up, it pops riders up for lofty airs and provides controlled, stable landings.? // Justin Lord.

TKB Says:

The Contra is back for 2017 as Cabrinha?s medium aspect light wind canopy with swept back wingtips and a stable three-strut canopy. The Contra delivers a consistent grunty pull with very comfortable medium bar pressure and smooth predictable power delivery. The Contra?s main selling point is that it delivers grunt with fairly good steering response and turning speed that helps you keep it in the meat of the wind window. The Contra turns in a larger steering arc rather than a tight pivot but generates good power throughout maneuvers. The 3-strut frame delivers a solid balance between crisp canopy shape and a light overall feel, while the impressive pull makes this a no-brainer choice for extremely low wind freestyle sessions.

For this year?s test Cabrinha sent us three options each outfitted with the Fireball system: 1) Overdrive 1X with Recoil (Adjustable bar ends with spring/tuning strap) 2) Overdrive 1X with Trim Lite (Adjustable bar ends with cam cleat tuning) and 3) 1X with Trim Lite.

The Fireball system offers a proprietary ball and socket connection between the control bar and your harness. Most testers chose to use the supplied NP harnesses with the Fireball spreader bar attached. The Fireball brings the pivot point between harness and kite closer to your body which tended to reduce the spreader bar from ratcheting upward into your ribs and reduced the harness? propensity to rotate. Some testers praised the Fireball for keeping the throw close to the body and for making back rolls and toeside riding easier and more comfortable. The Fireball is a fairly clean push away quick release with a below the bar hand swivel that doubles as a release guard. The quick release handle has a notch similar to last year?s that locks the handle in the open position for an easier reset in the water. While some testers were indifferent or resistant to adopting a new harness system, the one very clear advantage of the Fireball is doing away with the traditional chicken loop and donkey dick system and it?s potential to create a false or ?foul hooked? situation in which the bar becomes unhooked seconds after launch or midway through a session. If you?ve ever seen a beginner negotiate the perils of a foul hooked situation on a rock studded beach, then you?d know that the safety feature of the Fireball sells itself.

The Overdrive 1X with Recoil is a dual adjustable length bar (48cm/56cm or 57cm/65cm) that riders can adjust on the water. The Recoil features a streamlined single center-line safety depower system, low V, and a fixed length durable plastic sheeting/throw line which combines above the bar tuning with longer travel throw while keeping controls well within the rider?s reach by using extension handles. The plastic depower/throw line doesn?t include an adjustable stopper but the spring loaded controls act to keep the bar within reach when let go. The center lines end in a knot and the outside lines end in loops. Testers commented on the Overdrive 1X?s slightly thicker grip diameter and liked the rubber texture of the hand grip.

The Overdrive 1X with Trim Lite is a dual adjustable length bar (48cm/56cm or 57cm/65cm) that riders can adjust on the water. This bar features a streamlined single center-line safety depower system, low V, and a fixed length durable plastic sheeting/throw line which combines above the bar tuning via a cam cleat. This is likely Cabrinha?s answer to those riders that prefer a simpler bar layout than the spring/tuning strap (Recoil version). The center lines end in a knot and the outside lines end in loops. Testers commented on the 1X?s slightly thicker grip diameter and liked the rubber texture of the hand grip.

The 1X with Trim Lite is a fixed length bar (44cm, 52cm and 60cm) that features a streamlined single center-line safety depower system, low V, and a fixed length durable plastic sheeting/throw line which combines above the bar tuning via a cam cleat (another option to Cabrinha?s Recoil system). The center lines end in a knot and the outside lines end in loops. Compared to the adjustable bar ends of the Overdrive, the 1X with Trim Lite is overall lighter and requires smaller floats. Testers commented on the 1X?s slightly thicker grip diameter and liked the rubber texture of the hand grip. Cabrinha also offers this bar?s adjustable length bar ends (Overdrive) with the Trim Lite simplified cam cleat tuning system instead of the spring/tuning strap/extensions of the Recoil tuning system.

The Ozone Zephyr was the first lightwind-specific kite on the market and the V4 model carries on the tradition of having a massive wind range and being very user-friendly. Quick turning for a kite of this size allows the Zephyr to be a great training kite for loops and freestyle moves. Some of the performance shaping from the Edge race kite have been incorporated into the Ozone Zephyr let it fly more towards the edge of the wind window and also build good apparent windspeed.

The Zephyr V5 brings a completely new design to the market. It maintains key elements of the performance dominating Edge and ease of use from previous Zephyr models, with an all-new plan form and profile for increased performance and a smoother ride.

The Zephyr has always been a ground breaking kite - without doubt it was the first light wind specific kite on the market that delivered both performance and handling, the new V5 continues that legacy. Renowned for incredibly nimble handling, ease of use and the ability to have fun in low winds - all while giving you the possibility to continue riding when the wind increases, this sets the Zephyr apart from its competitors.

The V5 is more stable than previous versions offering a smoother feeling on the bar. Add to that fast handling with a tight radius turn you have a 17m kite that handles like a 13m which translates to more fun in light winds. The new plan form has a straighter Leading Edge, which increases the kites drive and acceleration through the turn - this helps generate power, fast handling and engaged kite loops.

The Zephyr V5 is perfect for cruising, jumping, air style, honing strapless airs or learning handle passes. The boost is impressive and floaty, with instant power delivery and superior up-wind performance. Re-launch is quick and easy by turning the bar or using the Re-launch Balls on the leader lines.

Ultra-strong lightweight bladders reduce weight and improve light wind performance for lighter steering and faster handling. The 4-line pulley less bridle system keeps things simple, while our proven front-line flag out ensures a complete stop of power from the kite when the quick-release is activated.

There is no question that the Zephyr V5 will get you out there enjoying whatever aspect of kiting you prefer on the day. It?s the perfect light wind addition to your quiver, or if you often ride in light winds and are looking for an all-round one-kite quiver the Zephyr V5 is the kite for you.

Design and Performance Features:

  • 4-line pulley-less system - NO pulleys, NO problems. We design all our inflatable kites without pulleys, to inherit the unique Ozone feeling and performance across our range.
  • Designed with OZ-CAD - The FUTURE is NOW - All Ozone kites are designed and developed using our own highly advanced custom built CAD software. Our designers are able to work with parameters specifically formulated to calculate unique aspects required in technical Inflatable and Foil kites. Part of our design team is dedicated to the upgrade of the CAD code and addition of new modules and features to the program as the development of our kites continues.
  • Back-line trimming options - Customise your handling and bar pressure with the back line bridle attachments. Closer to the Leading Edge for slower turn speed and more bar pressure, or closer to the Trailing Edge for faster turn speed and less bar pressure.
  • One-Pump inflation system - The One Pump inflation system enables quick and easy setup with single point inflation of the kite. All Struts are connected to the Leading Edge via inflation points ? air will flow through the hose to inflate the entire kite. Clips seal the hose connecting the Struts and Leading Edge to prevent unwanted airflow in case of damage.
  • High volume inflate/deflate valve - A high volume valve makes inflation and deflation quick and easy. Pumping is a breeze thanks to the high airflow rate, while the internal seal engages to stop any air coming out under pressure. Unscrew the bottom of the valve to deflate and pack your kite with ease.
  • Fool proof line connectors - Fool proof numbered line connectors prevent incorrect rigging of the flying lines to the kite.
  • Anti-snag line deflectors - The Anti-Snag line deflectors prevent bridles and lines from tangling around the wing tip. Safety is increased when launching with a partner and water re-launch is made easier.
  • Exceptional Ozone factory construction - World-class construction in our own factory, using the highest quality materials and hand checked Quality Control at every step. The Ozone factory also manufactures our Paragliding and Speed Wing range; the same Quality Control processes are used across all products.
  • Teijin TechnoForce D2 & Teijin Dacron - Teijin is the world's leading supplier of polyester fabrics and sail materials for marine sports. We use the remarkably durable Teijin D2 canopy material in all our water kites. Teijin D2 is the benchmark in quality with proven superiority in durability and dynamics. We use the incredibly strong and reliable Teijin Dacron in all our water kites. Dacron is used on parts requiring rigidity and stability ? the Leading Edge, Struts, Wingtips, and all loaded areas with extra reinforcement for enhanced load distribution and durability.
  • Direct connect struts - Our Direct Connect construction method improves load distribution between the Leading Edge, Struts and Canopy. The Struts are connected directly to the Leading Edge with internal reinforcements and external webbing. This unique construction method ensures clean profiles are maintained with the optimum canopy tension.
  • Internal reinforcements - What?s on the inside counts too ? All Ozone kites are internally reinforced for improved strength and durability; such as a Double layered Dacron + Insignia taped Leading Edge closing seam with high strength threads.
  • Double stitched folded seams - Sail canopy seams are stitched, folded, and then stitched again for a clean and strong connection of the panels.
  • Load distribution panels - Dacron reinforcements are used on all loaded areas for enhanced load distribution. This means all loads are spread evenly into the sail ensuring the kite flies and performs at its best.
  • Reinforced leading edge and struts - The Leading Edge and Struts are reinforced in high stress areas to ensure the kite canopy remains in shape and performs at its best.
  • Reinforced trailing edge - Double layer Teijin D2 Trailing Edge strip with an internal light weight Dyneema reinforcement ? this reduces canopy wear and helps to maintain optimum Trailing Edge tension as designed. The Dyneema line also reduces any potential stretch at the Trailing Edge.
  • Low profile aerodynamic scuff pads - Leading Edge bumpers are often large and unnecessary cosmetic items. At Ozone we build our kites for performance and durability using the best materials & components available. Any areas requiring scuff protection we use a lightweight durable material with superior abrasion resistance, while keeping a low profile in order to reduce drag and maintain performance.
  • Unique bladder construction - Our bladders are constructed in-house with advanced custom built welding machines. Double layered sections are applied to any potential wear areas.

Light wind machine

The 2017 Crazyfly Cruiser LW was, is, and always will be the ultimate lightwind machine. The name sums it up perfectly: Cruising around, having fun and enjoying the ride even in the lightest winds. But of course, this board can handle a lot more than that. Due to its unique core construction and extremely light layers of fiberglass, the Cruiser LW can also be seriously abused. The very well balanced medium flex of this board suits intermediate and advanced riders, it rides comfortably in choppy waters and the flat rocker and inverted outline ensure that it is an incredible lightwind board.

The Cruiser LW has assymetric fins position. The fins are positioned on the heel edge of the tips and in the center of the tips. Due to the asymmetric fin position, the fins stay in the water all the time and provide better upwind ability of the Cruiser LW.
